Building on the 2011 Basic Bass session, this session will include more participation by session attendees, giving attendees the opportunity to tryout the concepts on a double bass. The goal of the session is to give orchestra directors a good understanding of the unique challenges that their bass students contend with when playing the bass.

Whether your main teaching gig is private or public music teaching, if you have a private studio, recruitment is an issue. This session will focus on different techniques, tools and tips for recruiting students into your private studio. Other studio topics that will be up for discussion include- scheduling, fees, space issues, taxes, and marketing options including technology.

Liz Dinwiddie, Director of Instrumental and Early Childhood Studios at Parlando School for the Arts, and Alison Reifschneider, Orchestra, Piano, AP Music Theory and Rock and Roll History at Grandview High School, CliniciansWith many districts cutting budgets and reassigning teachers some instructors are teaching strings for the first time. This session will give you a refresher course on the important aspects of playing an upper string instrument: posture, left side technique, right side technique, tone production, and set up. We will also discuss the differences between violin and viola which are more extensive than just the clef. Find out what you can realistically expect your upper string players to accomplish in their first few years of playing.

A demonstration of cello ensemble fun. Often cellos play “2nd fiddle” to the violins and cello ensemble gives them a chance to develop advanced techniques and to shine. Music to be chosen from Bach chorales, solo repertoire, cello ensemble favorites, Hampton String Quartet arrangements, and Apocalyptica.
